Nuclear News: Proof of concept: the Molten Salt Reactor Experiment.
Alvin Weinberg, Oak Ridge National Laboratory's longest-serving director, had been experimenting with molten sal reactors for about 13 years by the time the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission approved plans to build the Molten Salt Reactor Experiment at the laboratory in late 1960. The MSRE was operational from 1965 to 1968, proving molten-salt reactors were reliable and could be operated with other alternatives than uranium 235.
